The new Shoot and Run Format - is this our sport ?

Well, before I stopped competing I heared the discussions about the new format and that it was heavily discussed for Bejing. Well…know Bejing Olympic Games is coming next month and the new format will not take place.
However, it was reported that it shall come into action at the following season. Instead of the traditional shooting in the morning there shall be a biathlon like shooting running combination. We did something like this back in 1999 at the Modern Pentathlon World Tour, based on the Competition held by former World Champion Fabian Laszlo in Budapest.
However it was different, and nice to do it “as fun”. But now, a whole sport, careers, dreams and expectations are changed. Imagine you compete at the Olympic Games, you become fourth.
You cant say “I will try again in four years”, because the sport will change completely with a total different focus”. It is like you cut the bike ride in triathlon by half, just because it makes more sense for the media.
Tradition is a often named argument for this, that you cant change a sport being invented by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the Olympic Games like that.
But I think it is more like, where are the frontieres for politicians to change the sport. What is it for ? Who says it will do the profile of this sport any good ?
